Our Community Story
The Sandy Foundation, a nonprofit public charity, is passionately dedicated to building a community centered around accessibility, adaptability, and inclusion.

With the help of everyone, we strive to build a large community center building that will serve tens of thousands of our community members that are living with a disability, veterans, and our supportive family and friends.
As of the most recent census, there are 137,000+ community members living with a disability & 32,000+ veterans within Midlothian, Cedar Hill, Mansfield, Waxahachie, Venus, Ovilla, Grand Prairie, Red Oak, Glenn Heights, Ennis, and Alvarado. As of today, there are no community facilities within a 50-mile radius of Midlothian, Texas that provides adaptive sports leagues, veteran sports communities, employment opportunities for people living with disabilities, or large adult recreational sports leagues.
At the Sandy Foundation, our first initiative is to raise funds to build a community center that is built with accessibility at the forefront. Our community center will boast two center courts. One will be made of beach sand; the other court will be a standard multisport court. There will be an extra wide boardwalk with ample seating surrounding the fields. In convenient areas there will be 4 walk-up restaurants/breweries featuring local only food and beverages. There will be a soft play/day care area for young children to enjoy while parents and older children enjoy the court facilities. There will be a stage for concerts and local theater. There will be family bathrooms and locker rooms. Oh, did we mention, IT'S ALL INDOOR! That means year-round fun and programs! Lastly, it's FREE to enter and enjoy the community center. Yes, FREE!*
There are many unique features of this building, the main one being it is planned with full accessibility at the forefront. As someone who has people living with disabilities in their family, I have noticed they are often an afterthought in community facility planning. Walk-ways are too small for family members to walk beside those in wheelchairs. Bathrooms are often not family friendly, so caretakers cannot help their loved ones of opposite gender. Seating is not considered for those who may not be able to sit in a chair or stand. Ground texture is not considered for the visually impaired. Technology is not utilized to assist those with hard of hearing or who are deaf. Our facility is designed with as much accessibility as we can think of for those who need it most and are often not thought of in the beginning processes. Finally, we believe integration of our veterans and those living with a visible or invisible disability with our community, will give us all opportunities to normalize differences between humans and begin to consider inclusion and alternatives of construction in other public buildings.
Our organization focuses on promoting adaptive and inclusive sports, employing historically disadvantaged communities, education on different disabilities, sensory programs, career training, and various programs that enhance awareness and foster a sense of belonging. Join us in our mission to build a stronger, more connected community.
We can't wait to see you there! Consider donating today!
